5 Every-Day Tips To Manage Dental Cavity Pain

Milena Marguenski • 25 March 2020

To deal with regular tooth pain requires a lot of patience and courage. And if it is a cavity, hell broke loose on many young kids and adults who can’t resist their favorite chocolate, ice cream, and cold drinks.

Yet, they are pretty much manageable if you pay attention to oral health care tips and other recommendations.

Our teeth are prone to cavities that are a sign of poor dental care. Basically, they are very small craters on the hard surface of your tooth.

What makes your teeth susceptible to cavities?

  • Insufficient Vitamin D
  • Candy and sticky food intake
  • Heartburn
  • Dry mouth
  • Bedtime baby feeding
  • Inadequate teeth cleaning

Some General Guidelines To Manage Dental Cavities

1. Avoid Extremely Hot and Cold Food

Your tooth is sensitive because bacteria in plaque produce acid that starts eating away healthy minerals in your tooth enamel.

As the soft dentin layer has been penetrated, it reacts to food or liquid that is way too hot or cold causing acute pain.

Brush your teeth twice with warm water instead of cold.

2. Use Clove Oil (Eugenol Extract)

Commonly recommended for dental pain, eugenol extract demonstrates anesthetic and antiseptic properties. Using the oil helps to reduce sharp pain you may experience during tooth decay.

Soak a small piece of cotton in the oil. Using tweezers, place the cotton on the decaying tooth for 10 seconds. Do it regularly to assuage the pain.

3. Say No To Sugar

According to the World Health Organization , consuming sugary food is one of the significant risks for cavities. Reduce your sugar intake to at least less than 10% of your total caloric intake for the day.

Avoid binging on sugary food, and if you do, reduce the proportion per meal. This way, your enamel has a chance to remineralize.

4. Over-The-Counter Medication

Many dentists suggest OTC medication for immediate relief. These products relieve tooth decay pain, if not completely but eventually, you’ll experience the positive effects.

As a matter of fact, medicines that reduce inflammation works best for your dental pain. Follow your dentist’s instructions to avoid an overdose.

5. Oil Pulling

Swish coconut or sesame oil in your mouth for about 10-15 minutes and then spit it out. Oil pulling is an old therapy that significantly improves your oral dental health.

A small placebo-controlled clinical trial , showed that oil pulling with sesame oil reduces gingivitis and bacterias in the mouth.
